Let's All Get Better Gas Mileage

With gas prices rising daily, we are all looking for ways to conserve.  In addition to the Resources by Design HHO Generator, here are some helpful hints to reduce the amount of gas you use.

  • Drive more efficiently

Speeding, rapid acceleration and braking wastes gas.  Aggressive driving can lower you gas mileage by 5% around town and 33% at highway speeds.  The extra bonus is that sensible driving is safer for you and others so you may save more than your money.

Fuel Economy Benefit:*                                                     5-33%

Equivalent Gas Savings:                        $0.20-$1.35/gallon

  • Observe the Speed Limit

Each vehicle has a different speed or range of speed in which it reaches optimal fuel economy, but in general gas mileage typically decreases significantly at speeds above 60 mph.

Increased speeds increase aerodynamic  drag.  By driving 65 mph instead of 75 mph you can reduce your gas consumption by about 15%.

You can assume that you will pay an additional $0.30 per gallon for each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph.

Fuel Economy Benefit:*                                                      7-23%

Equivalent Gas Savings:                         $0.29-$0.94/gallon

  • Remove Excess Weight

An extra 100  pounds in your vehicle could reduce your miles per gallon by up to 2%, affecting smaller vehicles more than larger ones.  The reduction is based on the extra weight relative to your vehicle's weight.

Fuel Economy Benefit:*                                                         1-2%

Equivalent Gas Savings:                         $0.04-$0.08/gallon

*Statistics based on figures published by the U.S. Department of Energy

Note:  Cost savings are based on  assumed gas prices of $4.08/gallon

  • Use Cruise Control

By using your cruise control you maintain a constant speed which will save gas.

  • Use Overdrive Gears

Using overdrive gears causes your car's engine speed to go down, saving gas and reducing engine wear.

  • Use A/C Sparingly

The extra load an air conditioner puts on an engine causes your vehicle to use approximately 20% more fuel.  The defrost position on most cars also uses the air conditioner.

  • Keep Windows Closed

Open window, particularly at highway speeds, increase drag and decrease fuel economy up to 10%.

  • Avoid Excessive Idling

Your car gets 0 miles per gallon when you idle. More gas will be wasted on larger vehicles than cars with smaller engines.

  • Consolidate trips

To avoid unnecessary miles, consolidate your errands and try to do find a single location to do your banking, shopping & other chores.

  • Maintain proper tire inflation

A third of all vehicles on the road have at least one tire that's improperly inflated.  You lose 1-2% fore every pound per square inch (PSI) that your tires are under-inflated, per tire. Multiply that by four and you can see the problem.  Its like trying to ride a bicycle that has low tires; it takes a lot more energy.
